Free Theatre in London ?!

Everybody loves to go to the theatre, but not everybody loves to pay for a show they might or might not enjoy. However, throughout the month of August, The Scoop has been giving free shows to three condensed versions of Sophocles tragedies. Oedipus - Prince of Thieves, Oedipus Rex and Antigone.

The scoop theatre has no income what-so-ever and relies mostly on sales of programs and badges and sponsorship, despite being located in between Boris Johnson's buildings!

The cast rehearsing Prince of Thieves

The first play, Prince of thieves, is very child friendly with interaction with the audience, filled with smiles and laughs throughout the whole performance.
We follow young Oedipus's journey to become King with his loyal friends Pandora (who is played by Charlotte Whitaker) and Archie, the talking bear, who is very sarcastic and loves making puns. (Played by Joseph Wicks).
The  play itself is much like a panto as it consists of singing well know modern pop songs and children shouting out to the cast with help.

Oedipus and Antigone

However, after this child friendly performance, things become more dark as Oedipus finds out the truth about his birth and parents, making him and his daughter Antigone suffer the consequences. With both hour long productions have a much more serious and in-depth approach to the tale compared to the children show. Philip Scott-Wallace, who plays Oedipus put on a magnificent performance during this tale, which made a connection between actor and audience. With this we could feel the emotional side of Oedipus's tale.

Not only is the shows amazing, but the staff there are amazingly friendly and happy to help any way they can to ensure that their audience is having the best time they possible can.

The shows run every Wednesday to Sunday until September 1st and is completely free. So if you're in London I highly recommend viewing these performance at The Scoop Open Air Theater.

Oedipus Rex- 8pm - 9pm
Antigone- 9:15pm - 10:15pm
